Sailing past the Berney

Given that it hasn't been used since 1951, the Berney Arms Windmill isn't looking too bad. It sits on a Norfolk riverbank at the confluence of the rivers Yare and Waveney, a few hundred yards from one of Britain's few remaining pubs that's inaccessible by road.

All these were taken on my tiny Ricoh GR, using the in-camera black and white mode (which is impressive). Bigger versions are available on Flickr.

To the east of the Berney there's nothing but fast flowing choppy water, flanked by mud flats, until you get to Yarmouth 5 miles away. Beyond Yarmouth, is the sea. Not a place to fall in.

I used to come here every year in my late teens for Breydon Regatta. The boats were big and the racing was exciting. Once the fun was over, stories were shared in the beer tent...
